World Brain Tumour Day: CMRI Highlights Breakthroughs in Brain Tumour Surgery and Precision Care

Kolkata, June 8, 2026: Marking World Brain Tumour Day, CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI organized a special press conference in Kolkata to spotlight the remarkable advancements in brain tumour diagnosis and treatment. The event was led by renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Amitabha Chanda, Director of Neurosurgery, and brought together clinicians, patients, and caregivers to discuss how modern neurosurgical innovations are transforming patient outcomes.

Addressing the media, Dr. Amitabha Chanda emphasized that brain tumour surgery has undergone a revolutionary transformation over the last decade. Advanced imaging technologies now enable surgeons to map critical brain functions such as speech, movement, memory, and vision before surgery. Modern neuronavigation systems, intraoperative monitoring, fluorescence-guided surgery, and awake craniotomy techniques have significantly improved surgical precision while reducing risks and preserving neurological functions.

“Procedures that were once considered highly risky are now being performed with greater confidence and significantly better outcomes,” Dr. Chanda stated. He added that these innovations are allowing surgeons to remove tumours more effectively while safeguarding patients’ quality of life.

The conference also highlighted the growing role of precision medicine, where genetic and molecular profiling of tumours helps doctors tailor treatment plans for individual patients. Experts noted that artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used for tumour characterization, surgical planning, and predicting treatment outcomes, ushering in a new era of personalized brain cancer care.

Providing the hospital’s perspective, Dr. Sombrata Roy, Unit Head, CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI, stressed the importance of awareness and timely intervention.

“On World Brain Tumour Day, our focus extends beyond clinical excellence to awareness, empathy, and patient support. Early consultation and timely diagnosis can dramatically improve treatment outcomes and recovery. Patient experience-sharing sessions help families understand the importance of early intervention and multidisciplinary care,” he said.

CMRI also showcased its expertise in minimally invasive neurosurgery, including advanced endoscopic procedures that allow certain brain tumours to be removed through the nasal passages without external incisions. These techniques have significantly reduced surgical trauma, shortened hospital stays, and accelerated recovery.

Experts at the event underscored the importance of recognizing early warning signs of brain tumours, including persistent headaches, unexplained vision problems, seizures, memory disturbances, and progressive weakness. Early neurological evaluation remains crucial in expanding treatment options and improving prognosis.

Established in 1969, CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI is a NABH-accredited, 440-bed multi-specialty healthcare institution in Kolkata. The hospital continues to be at the forefront of advanced medical innovation, with multidisciplinary teams offering cutting-edge treatments across specialties, including neurosurgery, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and robotic surgery.

The event concluded with a strong message: while medical science has dramatically improved the treatment of brain tumours, greater public awareness and early diagnosis remain the key factors in saving lives and improving long-term outcomes.
