Howrah 12 June 2026 :
In a major breakthrough for India’s clean energy sector, the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur has unveiled the country’s first indigenous Green Hydrogen Cooking Oven capable of generating hydrogen on demand without the need for storage cylinders.
The innovative technology, developed under IIEST’s technology incubation ecosystem, is being hailed as a significant step toward sustainable cooking solutions, energy independence and carbon reduction. By producing hydrogen instantly through water electrolysis and consuming it immediately for cooking, the system addresses one of the biggest challenges in hydrogen adoption — safe storage and transportation.
A Boost for Clean Cooking and Energy Security
The pioneering oven is designed for large-scale applications including commercial kitchens, restaurants, hotels, cloud kitchens, institutional food services and government feeding programs. Experts believe the technology could significantly reduce dependence on LPG and other fossil fuels while promoting cleaner and more affordable cooking operations.
With India aiming to strengthen its clean energy infrastructure, the innovation aligns closely with the country’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and broader commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
Potential Game-Changer for Mid-Day Meal Programs
The technology is expected to have a transformative impact on West Bengal’s vast Mid-Day Meal ecosystem, which serves millions of students every day. Since fuel costs constitute a major portion of operational expenditure in community kitchens, the hydrogen-powered system could provide a sustainable and cost-effective alternative.
When integrated with solar power and other renewable energy sources, the oven has the potential to create decentralized clean cooking hubs, reducing long-term energy costs while enhancing environmental sustainability.
