Students Explore Kolkata’s Durga Puja Traditions, Heritage Architecture and Cultural Legacy
Kolkata, October 7, 2026: With Kolkata’s iconic Durga Puja traditions once again bringing the city’s cultural heritage into the spotlight, SPK Jain Futuristic Academy took experiential learning beyond the classroom by organising a Bonedi Bari Heritage Walk at Ramgopal Saha’s House Durga Puja.
The initiative gave students an opportunity to explore one of Kolkata’s traditional family Puja celebrations and gain first-hand insights into the rituals, customs, architecture and social traditions that have shaped the city’s distinctive Bonedi Bari Durga Puja culture.
During the heritage walk, students explored the history and legacy of Ramgopal Saha’s House while learning how generations of families have preserved their unique Puja traditions. The experience also offered them an opportunity to observe the architectural character of the heritage property and understand the cultural practices associated with traditional household Durga Puja celebrations.
Going beyond the festive celebrations, the students were encouraged to explore the stories, values and community traditions that have contributed to Kolkata’s cultural identity. Through observation and interaction, they gained a deeper understanding of how traditional practices have evolved over generations while continuing to retain their cultural significance.
The heritage walk reflected SPK Jain Futuristic Academy’s focus on experiential and contextual learning, encouraging students to connect classroom education with real-world experiences. The visit enabled them to explore the links between history, culture, architecture and living traditions within their own city.
Dr. Jayeeta Ganguly, Principal, SPK Jain Futuristic Academy, said, “Education becomes more meaningful when students are able to connect what they learn in the classroom with the world around them. A Bonedi Bari offers a unique window into Kolkata’s history, traditions and cultural evolution. Through this experience, we wanted our students to understand not just the rituals of Durga Puja, but also the stories, values and heritage that have been preserved through generations.”
The visit to Ramgopal Saha’s House provided students with a closer understanding of Kolkata’s Bonedi Bari culture and its enduring Durga Puja traditions. The initiative further highlighted the Academy’s commitment to creating meaningful learning opportunities that connect students with the history, culture and heritage of their city.
The heritage walk served as a bridge between classroom learning and Kolkata’s living cultural traditions, allowing students to experience the city’s heritage first-hand.
