Kolkata 07 April 2026 :
A nationwide public awareness campaign opposing the proposed University Grants Commission (UGC) law has gained momentum, with Rashtriya Hindu Mahasabha leading protests across multiple states. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, National President Vijay Kaushik termed the proposed legislation a “black law” and urged the central government to withdraw what he described as provisions that could lead to “social disintegration.”
Kaushik stated that since January 13, dissatisfaction has been steadily growing among various sections of society, resulting in widespread demonstrations. He emphasized that despite repeated appeals, the government has yet to take corrective action, prompting the organization to launch a nationwide awareness drive.
Highlighting the role of the judiciary, Kaushik expressed hope that the Supreme Court of India would facilitate a timely resolution. However, he criticized the government for what he called a lack of “positive engagement” and urged immediate dialogue to address public concerns and withdraw controversial provisions.
According to Kaushik, the proposed UGC framework risks deepening caste divisions and creating societal discord. “This law is dividing communities and pushing citizens into conflict. It must be reconsidered in the interest of national unity and the future of the youth,” he said, warning that continued inaction could escalate tensions across the country.

The campaign, referred to as the “UGC Rollback Maha Abhiyan,” has reportedly seen participation from several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. Leaders claimed that a large-scale protest held on March 8 witnessed significant mobilization, with arrests reported during demonstrations at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan and along key border points.
National General Secretary Yogesh Sharma echoed similar concerns, calling upon communities to unite and voice their opposition democratically. He stressed that maintaining social harmony should remain a priority while ensuring that public concerns are adequately addressed.
Other prominent members present at the press conference included Ashish Gupta, Ved Prakash Dixit, Sunita Sharma, Ravindra Naruka, Meghashree Sujit Rai, and Kishan Banerjee.
The organization has appealed to the government to act swiftly, warning that failure to engage constructively may intensify the movement further.
