36 Hours, One Reclaimed Smile: Kolkata Lawyer’s Extraordinary Comeback After Complex Brain Surgery

Kolkata, 28 March 2026 :

In an inspiring story of courage, medical precision, and human resilience, 48-year-old Kolkata-based lawyer Dipanjan Bhattacharjee has successfully battled a life-threatening brain tumor—emerging stronger after a marathon 36-hour surgery that restored not only his health but also his confidence and identity.

A well-known legal professional, Dipanjan built his career navigating high-pressure courtroom battles and offering strategic counsel in complex cases. For years, he thrived in a demanding environment—until subtle symptoms began to disrupt the rhythm of his life.

The first sign appeared in 2018, when he noticed hearing loss in his right ear. Routine audiometry and ENT consultations led to the use of a hearing aid, but no advanced neurological investigations were recommended at the time. With no alarming indicators, life continued as usual.

Known for his disciplined lifestyle, Dipanjan maintained an intense fitness routine. However, over time, he began experiencing severe headaches while bending forward and even suffered two near-blackout episodes during workouts. These warning signs were initially attributed to fatigue, stress, and lack of rest.

The real turning point came in 2023, when a chance medical suggestion prompted him to undergo an MRI scan. The result was unexpected and devastating—a brain tumor. Despite his active lifestyle, the diagnosis shocked both him and his family.

In July 2023, Dipanjan underwent emergency surgery in Mumbai. However, doctors discovered that the tumor was heavily calcified, making complete removal highly risky. Only 15–20% of the tumor could be excised. Nevertheless, he showed remarkable recovery, gradually returning to near-normal life by August 2025.

But the relief was short-lived.

Within weeks, alarming symptoms resurfaced—acute dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, and complete hearing loss in his right ear. His condition worsened further due to increased cerebral oedema, requiring hospitalization and prolonged steroid therapy. Although stabilized, a persistent buzzing sensation and neurological complications—including facial nerve weakness and reduced motor function—raised fresh concerns.

At this critical stage, hope came through a referral to a specialist in Bengaluru. Under the care of Dr. Sampath Chandra, Program Lead – Skull Base Surgery at Manipal Hospital, Dipanjan and his wife Avanti decided to undergo a second, high-risk procedure.

On December 9, Dipanjan was taken into surgery for an extraordinary 36-hour-long operation—a complex and meticulously planned intervention aimed at removing the tumor, restoring facial nerve function, and placing a hearing implant.

The surgery involved a highly skilled multidisciplinary team spanning neurosurgery, ENT, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and anesthesiology. Using a specialised transtemporal skull base approach, surgeons accessed the tumor through a route behind the ear—one of the most technically demanding pathways in neurosurgery.

Explaining the complexity, Dr. Sampath Chandra said,
“Dipanjan’s meningioma was located deep at the base of the skull and is among the largest I have encountered. Given its size and location, a specialised surgical approach was essential to ensure maximum safe removal.”

The operation required removal of portions of the skull and brain tissue, carrying significant risks—including facial disfigurement and loss of speech—critical concerns for a practicing lawyer.

Yet, the outcome marked a remarkable turnaround.

Today, Dipanjan’s journey stands as a testament to timely medical intervention, cutting-edge surgical expertise, and unbreakable determination. From confronting a silent illness to enduring one of the most complex surgeries, his story is not just about survival—it is about reclaiming life, dignity, and a smile that was nearly lost.
