Kolkata, March 6, 2026: In a landmark development for cancer care in India, the Institute of Breast Diseases Kolkata hosted the India edition of the prestigious St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference, bringing together leading oncologists, researchers and healthcare professionals from across the world at Taj Taal Kutir in Kolkata.

The globally respected conference, known for shaping international breast cancer treatment guidelines, witnessed participation from over 500 delegates, including more than 10 international faculty members and 200 national experts, highlighting India’s growing contribution to global oncology research.

Experts at the conference discussed latest scientific evidence, innovative treatment approaches and strategies to ensure equitable access to breast cancer care, particularly in developing nations. A nationwide study cited during the conference revealed that the incidence of breast cancer in India has nearly tripled, rising from 13 cases per 100,000 women in 1990 to 29.4 per 100,000 in 2023.

A major highlight of the event was the launch of Project Pink Army, a community-driven volunteer movement aimed at spreading cancer awareness and strengthening patient support systems. The initiative builds on earlier outreach programmes such as Project Pink Alert, which engaged over 1.8 lakh participants through one of the world’s largest online cancer awareness webinars, recognised by the Guinness World Records.

International experts emphasised the importance of global collaboration in advancing cancer care. Prof. Beat Thürlimann from Switzerland noted that scientific progress must benefit patients everywhere, while Prof. Etienne Brain of Paris stressed the need for international cooperation to address regional challenges in cancer treatment. Prof. Jens Houber from St. Gallen highlighted the role of multidisciplinary care involving surgery, radiation oncology and systemic therapies in improving patient outcomes.

The conference also featured over 100 scientific abstracts and more than 30 research proposals, with selected projects receiving funding through a competitive grant programme. Five young investigators were chosen to present their research at the 2027 St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference in Vienna.

Another key component of the event was the Asian Cancer Consensus Meet, where experts discussed clinical challenges and treatment strategies specific to Asia. The outcomes of these discussions are expected to be published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Soumen Das, Director of the Institute of Breast Diseases, said that hosting the conference in Kolkata places Indian clinicians and researchers at the centre of global academic dialogue. Dr. Tanmoy Kumar Mandal, also Director at the institute, added that the initiative supports research funding, encourages young investigators and promotes access-based cancer care models relevant to the region.

With global faculty participation, research collaboration and community engagement under one platform, the conference marked a major step in positioning Kolkata as an emerging hub for global dialogue and innovation in breast oncology, while strengthening efforts toward equitable breast cancer care across India and Asia.
