Kolkata, July 27, 2026: Marking World Hepatitis Day, healthcare experts have raised concerns over the increasing prevalence of liver disorders in India, urging people to prioritize liver health through preventive care and healthier lifestyle choices.
Often referred to as the body’s natural detoxification center, the liver performs more than 500 essential functions, including digestion, metabolism, immunity, and the removal of toxins. Despite its critical role, experts say liver health remains one of the most overlooked aspects of overall well-being.
Medical professionals warn that modern lifestyle habits—including unhealthy diets, excessive consumption of processed foods, physical inactivity, alcohol intake, self-medication, environmental pollution, and the growing incidence of metabolic disorders—are significantly increasing the risk of liver disease. Adding to the concern is the fact that liver disorders frequently develop silently, with early symptoms remaining unnoticed for years.
Highlighting the importance of holistic liver care, Dr. Preeti Chhabra, Senior Ayurvedic Consultant, said that while healthy lifestyle practices remain the cornerstone of liver wellness, evidence-based herbal formulations may also provide supportive care.
“Along with healthy lifestyle practices, individuals may consider evidence-based herbal formulations that support normal liver function. Products such as Dabur Hepano, developed using time-tested Ayurvedic ingredients, can be used as part of a broader approach toward maintaining liver wellness. However, no supplement can replace the importance of a healthy diet, physical activity, and regular medical guidance,” she said.
Experts recommend several preventive measures to maintain long-term liver health, including eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, avoiding unnecessary medications and self-prescribed drugs, limiting alcohol consumption, practicing good hygiene, receiving hepatitis vaccination where recommended, and undergoing regular health check-ups—particularly for individuals with diabetes, obesity, or a family history of liver disease.
Dr. Chhabra also stressed that liver disease is not limited to alcohol-related conditions.
“Many people associate liver problems only with alcohol consumption, but the reality is much broader. Fatty liver disease, metabolic disorders, viral infections, poor dietary habits, and chronic stress are all contributing to the rising incidence of liver dysfunction,” she said.
Reinforcing the importance of prevention, she added, “Prevention remains the most effective strategy. Small lifestyle changes adopted consistently can significantly improve liver health and overall well-being.”
On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, healthcare professionals are encouraging people to adopt preventive healthcare practices and make informed lifestyle choices to protect liver health. Their message is clear: “Healthy Liver, Healthy Life”—a reminder that lasting wellness begins with everyday healthy habits.
