Care Health Insurance Highlights Inadequate Health Cover as a Growing Household Financial Risk

Rising medical costs can quickly exhaust existing policies, putting family savings and financial stability at risk

New Delhi, September 14, 2026: A serious medical emergency can wipe out years of household savings, particularly when health insurance coverage is insufficient to meet the rising cost of treatment. Highlighting this growing concern, Care Health Insurance has urged Indian families to regularly review their health insurance coverage and ensure that their policies provide adequate financial protection against major medical emergencies.

While nearly half of India’s population is now covered through a health insurance or healthcare financing scheme, a significant protection gap continues to remain. Many families have insurance but may still be underinsured, with their coverage falling considerably short of the expenses involved in treating serious illnesses.

Health insurance is often purchased once and then rarely reviewed. For many salaried individuals, the primary protection may also come from an employer-sponsored group policy. However, with healthcare costs continuing to rise faster than household incomes in many cases, existing coverage can quickly become inadequate.

A health insurance policy of ₹2–5 lakh, which may have appeared sufficient several years ago, can now be exhausted before treatment for a major illness is completed. Once the insurance limit is reached, families may be forced to use their savings, sell assets or borrow money, potentially turning a medical emergency into a long-term financial burden.

India Continues to Face a Significant Financial Protection Gap

The financial impact of healthcare expenses extends beyond individual households. High out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure remains a major source of financial stress for Indian families, making adequate health insurance an important component of household financial planning and India’s broader goal of Universal Health Coverage.

According to the Union Health Ministry’s National Health Accounts Estimates, Indian households financed 43.4% of the country’s total health expenditure out-of-pocket, underlining the continuing financial burden of healthcare expenses.

The National Statistical Office’s Household Consumption Expenditure Survey: Health (2025) also highlights the significant role of out-of-pocket spending in hospitalisation expenses, indicating that having an insurance policy does not necessarily mean that a family has sufficient financial protection.

Being Insured Is Not Enough—Adequate Cover Matters

Even families with health insurance can remain financially vulnerable if their sum insured is too low. Employer-sponsored group policies and entry-level family floater plans often provide coverage in the range of ₹3–5 lakh, which may not be sufficient for major medical procedures.

For instance, a liver transplant can cost approximately ₹18–35 lakh, while advanced cancer treatment and complex cardiac procedures can also involve expenses running into several lakhs.

Against this backdrop, the key question for families is increasingly shifting from “Do I have health insurance?” to “Do I have enough health insurance?”

Care Health Insurance Shares Five Key Steps

Care Health Insurance recommends that individuals and families take the following measures to strengthen their financial protection against rising healthcare costs:

1. Review your health insurance every year
Families should reassess their sum insured based on their healthcare requirements, city of residence and prevailing medical treatment costs. Coverage that was adequate a few years ago may no longer be sufficient.

2. Understand the policy before making a claim
Policyholders should be familiar with room-rent limits, co-payments, sub-limits, exclusions and other conditions. They should also understand available benefits such as automatic recharge and no-claim bonus provisions.

3. Do not depend entirely on employer-sponsored insurance
Corporate group insurance can be an important employee benefit, but coverage may be limited, may not always include parents and generally ends when an employee changes or leaves the organisation. Having an individual health policy can provide an additional layer of financial security.

4. Consider a super top-up plan
Combining a base health insurance policy with a super top-up plan can significantly increase the overall financial safety net at an additional cost that may be relatively lower than substantially increasing the base cover. Such protection can be particularly useful against high-cost treatments, including cancer care, cardiac procedures and organ transplants.

5. Ensure adequate coverage for parents and dependents
A family floater policy can potentially be exhausted by the medical needs of a single family member. Families should therefore assess whether senior citizens, parents and other dependents have sufficient individual or overall coverage.

Adequate Health Cover Becomes an Essential Part of Financial Planning

With medical expenses continuing to increase, adequate health insurance is increasingly becoming an essential component of household financial planning rather than a discretionary purchase.

Regularly reviewing insurance coverage and increasing the sum insured when necessary can help families protect their savings, reduce the risk of debt during medical emergencies and build greater long-term financial resilience.

Care Health Insurance continues to focus on improving insurance awareness and encouraging financial preparedness for healthcare, while helping individuals and families make informed decisions about their health insurance needs.
