CK Birla Hospitals – CMRI, Kolkata Unveils Eastern India’s First Private-Sector Bone Bank

CK Birla Hospitals – CMRI, Kolkata, has inaugurated the region’s first operational Bone Bank in the private sector, marking a major advancement in musculoskeletal, trauma, oncology, and reconstructive surgery care across Eastern India. Designed in alignment with stringent national and international standards, the Bone Bank ensures a reliable, high-quality source of bone allografts while reinforcing the hospital’s surgical excellence.

Bone banks are essential in modern orthopaedic care, ensuring timely access to thoroughly screened, microbiologically tested, and fully traceable grafts. By reducing reliance on autograft harvesting—a process often linked to increased operative time, donor-site pain, and higher morbidity—the Bone Bank aims to significantly improve surgical outcomes and patient recovery.

The new facility offers an extensive variety of graft options, including structural graft corticocancellous blocks, morselised grafts, and cancellous chips, enabling surgeons to tailor solutions according to clinical needs. The availability of ready-to-use grafts is poised to enhance outcomes for procedures such as tumour resections, spinal fusions, complex fracture repairs, nonunion surgeries, and deformity corrections.

Speaking on the milestone, Dr. Rakesh Rajput, HOD & Director, Orthopaedics, CK Birla Hospitals – CMRI, said:

“A dedicated Bone Bank is vital for advanced orthopaedic reconstruction. Bone allografts enable us to restore stability and structure without subjecting patients to the additional trauma of autograft harvesting. Better graft volume, reduced morbidity, and enhanced accessibility contribute to improved clinical results. This initiative marks a significant step toward expanding safe, ethical, and high-precision reconstructive care in our region.”

Adding to this, Mr. Sombarta Roy, Unit Head, CK Birla Hospitals – CMRI, stated:

“This facility reflects our commitment to advancing robust clinical infrastructure and patient-centred healthcare delivery. A dependable supply of regulated grafts will reduce waiting periods, improve access to complex surgeries, and elevate reconstructive care standards across Eastern India.”

The launch event was attended by distinguished dignitaries and experts, including Shri N. S. Nigam, Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department, West Bengal; Shri Firhad Hakim, Hon’ble Mayor of Kolkata; Dr. Swapan Saren, Director of Health Services, West Bengal; and Prof. (Dr.) Indrajit Saha, Director of Medical Education, West Bengal, who lauded CMRI’s pioneering role in advancing regulated tissue banking and strengthening surgical readiness in the state. The presence of patients who benefited from bone graft procedures added emotional significance to the inauguration.

A special acknowledgement was extended to Prof. (Dr.) Ajoy S. M., Senior Consultant, Ramaiah Medical College & Hospitals, and Coordinator, Ramaiah Tissue Bank, whose expert guidance played a crucial role in shaping the facility’s operational framework and ensuring adherence to national benchmarks.

Looking ahead, the Bone Bank at CMRI will also serve as a centre for research, surgical training, and innovation. It will support resident education, simulation-based learning, and comparative studies to enhance graft performance and processing techniques. Backed by trained personnel, validated protocols, and secure cold-chain systems, the facility is poised to emerge as Eastern India’s regional hub for ethical bone procurement, processing, and distribution.
