North 24 Parganas: A large-scale National Lok Adalat was organised across North 24 Parganas on Saturday, with thousands of cases being settled in a single day and disputes involving crores of rupees being resolved through mutual settlement.
A total of 50 benches were constituted across the district for the National Lok Adalat. Of these, 22 benches were set up in the Sadar area, including one Consumer Forum bench. In addition, six benches were established in Bongaon, five in Bidhannagar, seven in Barrackpore and 10 in Basirhat.
As many as 48,107 pre-litigation cases and 6,214 post-litigation cases were placed before the National Lok Adalat. Among the post-litigation cases, 415 were motor accident insurance-related cases.
The one-day initiative enabled the settlement of thousands of cases, involving the resolution and recovery of financial disputes running into crores of rupees. The settlements provided relief to a large number of litigants who had been involved in prolonged legal proceedings, offering them an opportunity to resolve their disputes in a faster, more affordable and amicable manner.
Speaking on the occasion, Sukumar Roy, District and Sessions Judge, North 24 Parganas and Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, North 24 Parganas, described the successful conduct of the National Lok Adalat as a major achievement for the district.
He said that the settlement of thousands of cases in a single day was undoubtedly a significant accomplishment. According to him, such settlements would help reduce the backlog of pending cases in courts and enable the judiciary to devote greater attention to more important and serious matters.
He further highlighted the benefits of Lok Adalats for litigants, stating that they help save the time, effort and financial resources that are often required to pursue cases over a prolonged period. Through mutual understanding and settlement, disputes can be resolved more quickly, making access to justice easier while simultaneously reducing the burden of pending cases on the judicial system.
