Suraksha Clinic and Diagnostics Raises Alarm on Ovarian Cancer as Survival Rate Drops to 20% in Late Stages

Suraksha Diagnostic Limited (“Suraksha Clinic and Diagnostics”), one of Eastern India’s leading diagnostics chains, conducted an online awareness session on ovarian cancer as part of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. The session, led by globally acclaimed gynaecological oncologist Dr. Asima Mukhopadhyay, shed light on the urgent need for early diagnosis in improving survival outcomes.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay highlighted that early-stage detection drastically improves prognosis—with Stage I offering up to a 90% cure rate and Stage II showing a 70% five-year survival rate. However, survival plunges to 20% or less in advanced stages, underscoring the silent yet deadly nature of the disease.

“Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed late due to vague symptoms that women tend to ignore. In India, nearly 40,000 women are diagnosed every year, with 70% succumbing to the disease,” Dr. Mukhopadhyay said. “Compared to its incidence, the mortality rate is disproportionately high, making it critical to strengthen early diagnosis and ensure accredited labs carry out testing.”

She explained the diagnostic pathway—from ultrasound and CT scans to biopsies and genomic tests such as BRCA and HRD, which play a crucial role in risk assessment and guiding targeted therapies like PARP inhibitors. Dr. Mukhopadhyay urged women to stay alert to early warning signs and seek timely medical advice without hesitation.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), ovarian cancer ranks as the third most common cancer among Indian women, with an incidence of 6.8 cases per 100,000. Globally, the World Health Organization projects a 50% rise in incidence and mortality, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries.

Calling attention to international health priorities, the session emphasized wider access to ultrasound and CA-125 tests, genetic counselling, advanced surgical training, affordable targeted therapies, and inclusion of women in clinical trials and survivorship programs.
