Kolkata, 26 November 2025: In a groundbreaking medical triumph, Narayana RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, has successfully conducted the world’s first kidney transplant on a patient suffering from severe Factor VII deficiency — an extremely rare genetic bleeding disorder found in only one in five million people globally. The milestone surgery further establishes Narayana Health as a leader in managing some of the most complex medical conditions.
With the patient’s father as the only available donor — who himself is a carrier of the same genetic defect — the case posed significant clinical and ethical challenges. Following extensive interdisciplinary consultations and risk analyses, the surgery was undertaken with exceptional precision and coordination.
“This case tested the very limits of medical coordination,” said Dr. Deepak Shankar Ray, Consultant & Chief Nephrologist, Renal Transplant Programme. “We were performing a transplant on a patient susceptible to life-threatening bleeding from even minor surgical interventions. Every stage — from anaesthesia to suturing — demanded synchronized monitoring of real-time clotting parameters. The success is a testament to meticulous planning, team excellence, and the family’s unwavering trust.”
He acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Tarshid Ali Jahangir from the Surgical Team and Dr. Titisa Sarkar Mitra from the Anaesthesiology Team.
Explaining the complexity of the disorder, Dr. Sisir Kumar Patra, Consultant – Haematology, added, “Managing severe Factor VII deficiency requires a precise therapeutic balance. Too little Factor VII leads to fatal bleeding, while excess could cause critical clotting. The surgical journey involved minute-by-minute monitoring, and we are extremely pleased that both the patient and donor are now stable and doing well.”

The post-operative phase tested the medical team further, as the patient briefly developed paralysis due to a minor clot. Through integrated care by nephrology, neurology and haematology departments, he made a full recovery. His kidney function has stabilized, and he is leading a healthy life after transplant.
Commending the feat, Mr. Abhijit C.P., Director & Cluster Head – Kolkata & Corporate Growth Initiative – Narayana Health, East, said, “This was among the most severe and rarest cases ever handled. Our clinicians not only saved a life but did so while ensuring the donor’s safety. This achievement places Eastern India on the global map for advanced clinical excellence.”
Mr. R. Venkatesh, Group COO, Narayana Health, added, “At Narayana Health, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of medical possibilities while upholding the highest ethical standards. This case embodies our legacy of multidisciplinary care, international best practices and compassionate service that touches lives across borders.”
The medical breakthrough has sparked significant interest among healthcare experts, highlighting both its scientific importance and the ethical considerations surrounding the case.
