Kolkata, 7 October 2025: In a remarkable medical achievement, Fortis Hospital Anandapur has successfully removed a large, complex brain tumour from a 40-year-old woman from Yangon, Myanmar. The surgery, led by Dr. G. R. Vijay Kumar, Director of Neurosurgery, lasted over 12 hours and involved the removal of a tumour roughly the size of a lemon.
The patient had been battling severe headaches, progressive vision loss, and balance issues for four months. At the time of admission, she had lost vision in her left eye and exhibited weakness on her right side. Detailed examinations revealed a massive clinoidal meningioma—a benign but challenging tumour located at the base of the skull—compressing her optic nerves, optic chiasma, and critical blood vessels supplying the brain. Such tumours are notoriously difficult to operate on, as any misstep can result in permanent blindness or paralysis.
The surgical team performed a highly delicate craniotomy and microsurgical tumour removal. The tumour’s entanglement with essential brain structures made the procedure extremely high-risk. Despite these challenges, the surgeons successfully removed the tumour entirely, preserving the patient’s neurological functions including movement, vision, and speech.
Post-surgery, the patient has shown remarkable recovery, regaining strength in her limbs and beginning to regain her vision. She is currently walking with support and is expected to make a full recovery.
