Kolkata, June 5: Marking World Environment Day 2026, environmental initiative Kisaanka, founded by Shrestha Ganguly, launched a large-scale plantation drive at the iconic Rabindra Sarobar (National Lake) in South Kolkata, reinforcing the city’s commitment to environmental conservation and climate action.
Organized with the support of KMDA, the initiative focused on planting flower-bearing and fruit-bearing trees around the lake precincts, aiming to enhance biodiversity, expand green cover, and encourage greater public participation in ecological restoration.
Observed globally on June 5, World Environment Day 2026 is being celebrated under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” aligning with the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) global climate campaign #NowForClimate.
Widely regarded as one of Kolkata’s “green lungs,” Rabindra Sarobar spans more than 73 acres and serves as a crucial biodiversity hotspot, supporting migratory birds, native flora, and aquatic ecosystems. The lake remains a hub for environmental awareness and community engagement, attracting nature enthusiasts, morning walkers, and conservation groups throughout the year.
The programme was graced by MLA Swapan Dasgupta, whose presence highlighted the growing importance of collective action in protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable development. The event also drew inspiration from the continued environmental contributions of S. M. Ghosh, whose efforts have played a significant role in strengthening community-driven conservation initiatives around Rabindra Sarobar.
Speaking on the occasion, organizers emphasized that meaningful climate action begins at the local level. Through initiatives such as this plantation drive, Kisaanka aims to inspire citizens to become active stakeholders in building a greener and more sustainable future.
As the world observes World Environment Day, the plantation drive at Rabindra Sarobar stands as a powerful reminder that environmental protection starts with community participation and sustained local action. Echoing the spirit of the first World Environment Day theme, “Only One Earth,” the historic lake continues to symbolize Kolkata’s enduring commitment to nature and conservation.
