Kolkata, 12 November 2025: Narayana Health Kolkata has reinforced its position as a regional leader in advanced respiratory and vascular medicine by introducing Eastern India’s only dedicated Thoracic–Vascular team, offering an integrated, multidisciplinary approach for patients with complex lung and vascular conditions. The newly established unit seamlessly brings together Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pulmonology, Critical Care, Respiratory Physiotherapy, and Rehabilitation under one coordinated clinical pathway—ensuring continuity of care from diagnosis to recovery. To further expand its advanced lung care ecosystem, Narayana Health Kolkata also announced the launch of ALCATI (Advanced Lung Care and Transplant Initiative) Clinics across its key hospitals—RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur; Narayana Hospital, Howrah; and Narayana Hospital, Barasat.
The ALCATI Clinics are designed to provide specialized, multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment for patients with advanced lung diseases and transplant needs. Consultations at these clinics will be free of cost, promoting early diagnosis and timely intervention for chronic and complex respiratory conditions.
ALCATI Clinic Schedule
- 2nd Friday of every month: Narayana Hospital, Howrah
- 3rd Friday of every month: Narayana RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur
- 4th Friday of every month: Narayana Hospital, Barasat
A Collaborative Approach to Complex Conditions
The Thoracic–Vascular team plays a pivotal role in the Advanced Lung Care & Transplant Initiative, working alongside pulmonologists, physiotherapists, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists to deliver a comprehensive patient journey—from diagnosis and surgical treatment to long-term recovery and rehabilitation.
This integrated model is especially vital in cases where thoracic and vascular diseases overlap—such as lung cancer, airway stenosis, mediastinal tumors, thoracic trauma, aortic aneurysms, and vascular complications within the chest cavity. By combining expertise across specialities, the team enables unified evaluation, surgical decision-making, and coordinated post-operative care.
Expert Insights
Prof (Dr.) Amitabha Chakrabarti, Clinical Lead & Senior Consultant – Thoracic & Vascular Surgery, Narayana Health Kolkata, said:“Many patients with thoracic and vascular conditions don’t fit neatly into one specialty. When both lung tissue and major vessels are involved, treatment must be planned together. Our strength lies in evaluating, operating, and rehabilitating as one unit—ensuring safer outcomes and smoother recovery for patients and their families.”
Dr. Manujesh Bandyopadhyay, Consultant – Thoracic & Vascular Surgery, added:“In most hospitals, patients need to see different specialists for the chest and vascular systems, often leading to confusion and delays. Our approach is collaborative from the start—focused not only on surgery but on preparing the patient, supporting recovery, and ensuring long-term respiratory and vascular health.”
Clinical Outcomes & Case Highlights
Across RN Tagore Hospital (Mukundapur), Narayana Hospitals in Howrah and Barasat, the Thoracic–Vascular team has successfully treated numerous complex cases, reaffirming its leadership in advanced lung and vascular care.
Key cases include:
- A 39-year-old with bullous lung disease treated through robotic bullectomy.
- A young woman with bilateral cervical ribs causing arterial thoracic outlet syndrome.
- A 24-year-old with an anterior mediastinal germ cell tumour.
- A 62-year-old with early-stage lung cancer managed via robotic-assisted lobectomy at RN Tagore Hospital.
Narayana Health Kolkata remains the only centre in Eastern India performing robotic lung cancer surgery, marking a major advancement in minimally invasive thoracic oncology.
At the pediatric level, a 2-year-old with empyema and multiple ruptured lung abscesses fully recovered following VATS decortication in Howrah. Meanwhile, a 22-year-old with a post-traumatic chest wall infection underwent Uniportal VATS in Barasat, achieving complete recovery.
