Kolkata, 31 May 2025:
In a powerful initiative aimed at combating tobacco-related cancers and promoting early detection, Medella Karkinos Oncology Institute (Karkinos Healthcare Kolkata), in collaboration with the Barrackpore Auto Union, organized a large-scale cancer screening and awareness program for auto-rickshaw drivers and their families in Barrackpore, North 24 Parganas, on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.
The camp witnessed the participation of over 100 individuals, primarily from underserved backgrounds, who received free screenings for cancers commonly linked to tobacco use such as head and neck, oral, and lung cancers. The event also featured comprehensive health check-ups and personalised counselling sessions focused on the harmful effects of tobacco and the importance of adopting a tobacco-free lifestyle.A dedicated health education program was conducted alongside the screenings to raise awareness about the risk factors associated with various types of cancer. Participants were guided on preventive healthcare practices and the critical role of regular screenings in early diagnosis and successful treatment outcomes.
Dr. Akther Jawade, Director – East, Karkinos Healthcare, emphasized the urgency of addressing the growing cancer burden in the state, stating:“West Bengal is facing a surge in cancer cases, and tobacco consumption remains one of the most dangerous and preventable causes. Unfortunately, the marginalized sections of our society often lack access to timely screenings and accurate information. Through this initiative, we aim to bridge that gap. Our mission at Karkinos Healthcare is not just to treat cancer but to prevent it through awareness, education, and early detection. We are proud to stand with the auto-rickshaw community of Barrackpore in this fight.”Leading the medical efforts at the camp was Dr. Samujjwal Das, Consultant – Maxillofacial and Head & Neck Oncosurgery, Karkinos Healthcare, along with a team of expert oncologists and support staff who ensured seamless execution of the program.
