Manipal Hospitals Kolkata Observes World Diabetes Day with Key Initiatives

Kolkata, November 12, 2025: Manipal Hospitals Kolkata marked World Diabetes Day 2025 with two impactful initiatives — the inauguration of the Manipal Institute of Diabetes at its Dhakuria unit and a comprehensive awareness program at its EM Bypass facility. Olympian shooter and Arjuna Awardee Joydeep Karmakar graced both events as Chief Guest. The initiatives highlighted the urgent need for early diagnosis, lifestyle awareness, and structured diabetes management as India faces a steep rise in diabetes cases, now often described as the “pandemic of the 21st century.”

At Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, the newly launched Manipal Institute of Diabetes aims to serve as a Centre of Excellence for comprehensive diabetes care. The institute brings together leading endocrinologists including Dr. Sujoy Ghosh, Dr. Amal Kumar Sinha, Dr. Monojit Ketan Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Anirban Sinha, Dr. Umakanta Mahapatra, Dr. Soham Tarafdar, and Dr. Shiladitya Nandi, providing round-the-clock expertise and support.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Sujoy Ghosh, Consultant – Endocrinology, said,“Diabetes is no longer confined to any particular age group — it affects children, young adults, and the elderly alike. With India home to over 100 million diabetics, the Manipal Institute of Diabetes has been established to address this growing challenge through an integrated model of care combining diagnostics, clinical expertise, and patient education.”

At Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, a series of public engagement activities promoted diabetes awareness. The highlight was the unveiling of the ‘Sugar Monster’, an interactive installation depicting hidden sugars in everyday foods — visually educating visitors on dietary habits that lead to diabetes. The hospital also released a Diabetes Awareness Booklet and an Information Poster to further promote public understanding.

Leading specialists including Dr. Subhankar Chowdhury, Senior Consultant & Head, Diabetology & Endocrinology; Dr. Uttio Gupta, Dr. Kaushik Biswas, and Dr. Sk Hammadur Rahaman actively engaged with participants through awareness sessions.

Dr. Subhankar Chowdhury emphasized the evolving approach to diabetes care:“World Diabetes Day reminds us that diabetes is not merely a medical condition but a reflection of changing lifestyles. The focus today is on prevention, education, and empowerment. Through integrated care and continuous awareness, we aim to help individuals live healthier, more balanced lives.”

Chief Guest Joydeep Karmakar lauded the hospital’s efforts, stating,“It’s inspiring to see Manipal Hospitals extending diabetes awareness beyond clinical walls. Initiatives like the ‘Sugar Monster’ and the new Institute not only inform but motivate communities toward healthier living.”

To mark the occasion, the Manipal Hospital EM Bypass building was illuminated in blue — the global color for diabetes awareness — while the Dhakuria unit will remain lit in blue from November 10–16, symbolizing sustained commitment to diabetes care.
