Niva Bupa Health Insurance has revealed that Kolkata’s youth are among the most financially and medically prepared in the country, outperforming the national average in health awareness and insurance readiness.
According to the “Young India Health Insurance Report 2026”, Kolkata recorded a Health Protection Score (HPS) of 5.87, significantly higher than the national average of 4.54. The report surveyed over 2,400 respondents across 35+ urban and rural centres nationwide.
The study introduced the Health Protection Score (HPS), a first-of-its-kind metric measuring preparedness for medical emergencies based on lifestyle discipline, family health history, preventive healthcare habits, and financial adequacy.
Kolkata Emerges as a Standout Market
The report highlighted several strong indicators for Kolkata:
- 54% of Kolkata youth were classified as “Safe & Secure”, compared to the national average of 24%
- Only 3% fell under the “Very Vulnerable” category
- Personal health insurance ownership stood at 21%, well above India’s 14% average
- Policy lapse rate was just 2%, compared to 6% nationally
Despite estimating emergency healthcare costs at around ₹96,000 — lower than the national average — respondents from Kolkata showed strong financial resilience, with the ability to arrange nearly ₹4.9 lakh during emergencies.
Awareness High, But Gaps Remain
Nationally, the report found that while 51% of young Indians consider health insurance a top financial priority, only 14% currently own a policy. Nearly 76% remain financially or medically vulnerable to unexpected health emergencies.
Interestingly, Kolkata’s intent to purchase new health insurance policies stood at 43%, slightly lower than the national average of 51%. Experts believe this is due to higher existing coverage levels and greater financial confidence among residents.
Human Influence Still Drives Insurance Decisions
The report also noted that perceived good health remains one of the biggest reasons people avoid purchasing insurance. At the same time, agents, banks, and family members continue to play a major role in influencing buying decisions.
Speaking on the findings, Nimish Agrawal said Kolkata reflects a strong balance of awareness, financial preparedness, and health insurance adoption, while also presenting opportunities to improve preventive lifestyle habits.
The report positions Kolkata as a leading example of health preparedness in India, with strong insurance discipline and financial planning helping young consumers stay better protected against medical uncertainties.
