Kolkata | February 2026
Reinforcing its commitment to clinical excellence and medical innovation, CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI is set to host a two-day knowledge-sharing and clinical exchange programme on February 13 and 14, focusing on the latest advancements in interventional radiology, with a special emphasis on the diagnosis, screening and minimally invasive treatment of venous diseases — an increasingly under-recognised public health concern in India.
The programme will also spotlight the expanding role of advanced endovascular embolization techniques in cancer care, highlighting non-surgical treatment pathways for selected oncology patients through image-guided vascular interventions.
Global & National Experts to Lead Deliberations
The academic initiative will bring together internationally acclaimed interventional radiologist Dr. Carrafiello from Milan alongside Dr. Avik Bhattacharyya, Director & HOD, Interventional Radiology, CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI.
The experts will deliberate on cutting-edge, image-guided techniques used in managing complex venous and vascular conditions, including:
- Varicose Veins
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Pelvic Venous Disorders
- Complex Vascular Malformations
Rising Burden of Venous Diseases
Medical experts highlight that venous diseases are steadily rising across age groups due to sedentary lifestyles, prolonged standing or sitting, obesity and post-COVID vascular complications. Despite this growing burden, these conditions remain significantly underdiagnosed, as symptoms are often misinterpreted as cosmetic or lifestyle-related concerns.
High-risk occupational groups include traffic police personnel, chefs, teachers, retail workers and factory employees — professions that involve prolonged standing. The session aims to build awareness around early warning signs, timely screening and modern treatment options to prevent chronic complications such as persistent pain, swelling and venous ulcers.

Transforming Care Through Interventional Radiology
The initiative will demonstrate how interventional radiology has revolutionised venous care by replacing conventional surgery with pinhole, image-guided procedures that:
- Minimise pain
- Reduce hospital stay
- Enable faster recovery
- Improve clinical outcomes
A key highlight of the programme will be live case-based discussions showcasing advanced venous and vascular interventions. Many of these high-end procedures — once limited to select metro centres — are now being routinely performed in Kolkata, significantly improving access to advanced care for patients across Eastern India.
Leadership Speaks
Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Avik Bhattacharyya said:
“Venous diseases often progress silently and are widely misunderstood, leading patients to seek medical help only when complications arise. Through this programme, we aim to demonstrate how early diagnosis and minimally invasive interventional radiology techniques can transform outcomes. Bringing global expertise to CMRI reflects our commitment to making world-class care accessible closer to home.”
Adding further, Sombrata Ray, Unit Head, CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI, stated:
“This initiative is not just about clinical advancement, but also community awareness. By focusing on high-risk occupational groups and lesser-known venous conditions, we aim to empower people with knowledge that can lead to early intervention and better quality of life. CMRI continues to invest in advanced technologies and global collaborations to strengthen Kolkata’s position as a centre for cutting-edge, minimally invasive healthcare.”
Strengthening Eastern India’s Healthcare Landscape
The programme underscores CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI’s continued focus on global collaboration, patient-centric innovation and advanced clinical practices, while reinforcing Kolkata’s growing stature as a hub for advanced interventional and minimally invasive healthcare in Eastern India.
