Kolkata, September 25, 2026: Ahead of World River Day on September 27, Eden Realty Group has unveiled the design and development roadmap for a new riverfront ghat at Howrah, inspired by the iconic ghats of Banaras. The initiative is part of the group’s riverfront development plan at Shalimar and is being developed as a component of its flagship Eden Debaprayag project.
The proposed ghat will come up along Lower Foreshore Road in Shibpur and will stretch approximately 100 metres along the Hooghly River. Designed as a landscaped, stepped riverfront, the development aims to create a public space that brings together the city’s river heritage, cultural activities and contemporary urban infrastructure.
A Banaras-inspired experience along the Hooghly
The planned riverfront will feature a dedicated Ganga Aarti Zone, along with a banquet facility for cultural programmes and large gatherings. The rooftop of the banquet facility will include an open-air swimming pool and party lawn, offering views of the Hooghly.
A public promenade will run along the riverfront, providing space for pedestrians to enjoy the riverside. Heritage lighting is also planned across the ghat to enhance the atmosphere during evening aarti and cultural events.
Focus on riverbank protection and sustainability
According to Eden Realty, environmental protection and riverbank conservation have been incorporated into the project design. The riverfront structure is being developed based on a design proposed by Jadavpur University, taking into account variations in water levels caused by tides and river currents.
A green belt comprising native vegetation is also planned around the riverbank to help retain soil and maintain ecological balance.
The project will incorporate a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system for wastewater management. Used water will be treated and recycled for various purposes, with the objective of preventing untreated wastewater from entering the Hooghly.
Investment of over ₹20 crore
The proposed ghat is expected to involve an investment of more than ₹20 crore and forms part of Eden Realty’s larger ₹150-crore riverfront development project, which also includes a five-star hotel.
Designed by architect Kapil Bhalla of Se-arch, the ghat is targeted for completion ahead of the upcoming Ganga Dussehra festival. The project is being developed with the cooperation and support of the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK).
Eden Debaprayag at the centre of the development
Eden Realty’s flagship luxury residential project, Eden Debaprayag, is being developed on approximately 9 acres at Lower Foreshore Road, Shalimar. The project will comprise five towers of B+G+28 floors and forms part of the larger 38-acre Kolkata Westshore development along Shalimar Road.
The company said the initiative represents an effort to combine modern residential development with publicly accessible infrastructure and river conservation. The project has also been positioned as being aligned with the broader objectives of the Government of India’s Namami Gange programme.
Importantly, Eden Realty stated that the proposed ghat will remain open for use by the general public, rather than being restricted to residents of the adjoining development.
