In a powerful blend of compassion, creativity, and preventive healthcare, Apollo Cancer Centre (ACC) has launched ‘Check-Olate’, an innovative breast cancer awareness initiative that transforms a simple chocolate indulgence into a life-saving reminder for women.

Designed to encourage regular breast self-examination, Check-Olate is more than a campaign—it is a movement urging women to pause, care for themselves, and take charge of their health through simple yet meaningful monthly rituals.

According to GLOBOCAN, breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality among Indian women, accounting for 13.5% of all new cancer cases and 10.6% of cancer-related deaths. Despite this alarming reality, screening rates remain critically low, with only 1.6% of women aged 30–69 having ever undergone screening, as per NCBI data.

Recognising the urgent need to bridge this awareness gap, Apollo Cancer Centre aims to normalise breast self-examination through Check-Olate, making early detection a habit rather than an afterthought.

The initiative was officially launched in the presence of Dr. Surinder Singh Bhatia, Director – Medical Services, Apollo Hospitals, Eastern Region; Smt. Sumitra Barat, Executive Member of Hitaishini; and a distinguished panel of medical experts including Dr. Arundhati De, Dr. Mukti Mukherjee, Dr. Rashmi Chand, Dr. Ritu Srivastava, and Ms. Suhita Mukherjee.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Surinder Singh Bhatia said:

“When women thrive, nations flourish. At Apollo Cancer Centre, we are committed to early detection and timely intervention. Check-Olate reinforces the message that self-care is not a luxury but a powerful tool that strengthens families, communities, and the nation.”

Highlighting the clinical importance of awareness, Dr. Arundhati De, Consultant – Radiation Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, Kolkata, stated:

“Early detection saves lives. Breast self-examination helps women become familiar with their bodies and recognise abnormalities early. Through Check-Olate, we are turning a comforting moment into a gentle yet impactful reminder that just a few minutes each month can make all the difference.”

Each Check-Olate dark chocolate bar carries a QR code, which when scanned, opens an animated step-by-step video guide demonstrating the correct method of breast self-examination—making awareness accessible, simple, and stigma-free.

Smt. Sumitra Barat, Executive Member, Hitaishini, added:

“Chocolate brings warmth and joy into our daily lives. What makes Check-Olate special is how it transforms that joy into a heartfelt reminder for women to prioritise their health.”

Beyond symbolism, the initiative thoughtfully uses dark chocolate, known for its antioxidant and flavonoid content, which supports cardiovascular health, reduces inflammation, and uplifts mood—reinforcing the idea that caring for health can also be comforting.

With Check-Olate, Apollo Cancer Centre redefines healthcare communication—combining empathy, innovation, and purpose—to empower women, promote early detection, and strengthen the fight against breast cancer.
