Aashayein 2026 Illuminates Kolkata with Hope, Sport and Inclusion

Kolkata, February 1, 2026 (Sunday):

Kolkata witnessed a powerful celebration of resilience, dignity and inclusion on Sunday as Aashayein – Roshni Umeedon Ki returned with its 12th Annual Paralympics Sports Carnival, bringing together nearly800 specially-abled children from 40 schools and institutions across the city for a day dedicated to inclusive sports and community bonding.l

Organised by the Lions Club of Calcutta (District 322B1) in association with Round Table India (RT 113) and Ladies Circle India (LC 132), the event was held at the Gitanjali Stadium Ground, which resonated with enthusiasm, encouragement and collective spirit. The initiative reaffirmed Kolkata’s enduring commitment to equal opportunity, dignity and social inclusion for children with special abilities.

The young participants competed in a variety of sporting events designed not merely as contests, but as platforms to build confidence, foster participation and celebrate individual achievement. Events included 50-metre and 100-metre flat races, ball throw and shot put, all conducted under the supervision of trained officials from the Sodepur Referee Association (SRA), ensuring safety, fairness and professional standards.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by senior police officials and distinguished guests, lending added significance to the occasion. Among those present were Devendra Prakash Singh, IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police, Kolkata Police, and Rupesh Kumar, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Kolkata Police. CA Pawan Kumar Patoda, Vice President, Special Olympics Bharat, attended as the Special Guest and interacted warmly with participants, volunteers and organisers.

The programme commenced with a ceremonial march past, followed by flag hoisting and a balloon release, setting an inspiring tone for the day. Beyond athletics, the organisers curated a vibrant fun carnival zone featuring magicians, jugglers, character artists and interactive performers, ensuring an engaging and joyful experience for all participants. Volunteers were deployed throughout the venue to facilitate coordination and maintain safety.

Each participating child was provided with breakfast, lunch, event T-shirts, jackets, caps and specially curated gift hampers, highlighting the organisers’ emphasis on participation, respect and inclusion over competition.

Addressing the gathering, Lion Krishan Gopal Kejriwal, President of the Lions Club of Calcutta, said the initiative celebrates courage and self-belief.

“Aashayein goes beyond sport. It recognises the strength, determination and confidence of every child who steps onto the field,” he said.

Lion Prasant Jaiswal, Chairman of Aashayein 2026, underscored the collective effort behind the event, acknowledging the vital role played by institutions, volunteers and community partners in creating an inclusive platform.

With a legacy spanning several decades, the Lions Club of Calcutta continues to play a significant role in healthcare, education and social inclusion. Now in its 12th year, Aashayein remains one of the club’s most impactful outreach initiatives, reinforcing Kolkata’s long-standing tradition of compassion, inclusivity and community service.
