New Delhi, August 4: Commemorating the 80th year of India’s Independence, MMTC-PAMP, India’s only London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Good Delivery gold and silver refiner, unveiled its limited-edition ‘Virasat – Celebrating 80th Year of India’s Independence’ gold coin at Taj Mansingh, New Delhi. The commemorative coin was launched by Olympic silver medallist and three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Mirabai Chanu, who also became the first recipient of the exclusive edition.
Fresh from creating history by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals, Mirabai Chanu was honoured for her remarkable contribution to Indian sports and for inspiring millions across the country. MMTC-PAMP said the inaugural presentation of the Virasat coin symbolises India’s spirit of resilience, determination and excellence.
The commemorative coin is crafted from 10 grams of 999.9+ pure (24K) recycled gold and features a premium minted finish. Limited to just 8,000 pieces, each coin comes in tamper-proof packaging with certified purity authentication. The exclusive edition will be available through MMTC-PAMP retail stores, authorised channel partners and the company’s official website.
Speaking at the launch, Samit Guha, Managing Director & CEO, MMTC-PAMP, said the Virasat coin is a tribute to a nation that continues to inspire the world through resilience, innovation and achievement. He added that presenting the first coin to Mirabai Chanu reflects the company’s commitment to celebrating individuals whose dedication continues to elevate India’s global stature while promoting responsible gold recycling and the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The launch also reinforces MMTC-PAMP’s commitment to sustainable sourcing and strengthening India’s precious metals recycling ecosystem. With India importing more than 90 per cent of its annual gold requirement and gold imports reaching nearly US$72 billion in FY2025-26, the company emphasised that responsible gold recycling is essential to reducing import dependence, conserving foreign exchange and building a more sustainable supply chain.
MMTC-PAMP currently operates 17 gold recycling stores across India and continues to expand its organised recycling network. Earlier this year, the company also introduced the industry’s first organised silver buyback programme for silver coins, bars and jewellery, encouraging consumers to recycle precious metals through a transparent and trusted channel.
