Hooghly, June 26: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Hooghly, in collaboration with the voluntary organisation Sankalpa Today, organised a special awareness programme to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and promote awareness about the NALSA ‘Jagriti’ Project. The event was held at Phulbari Restaurant & Resort on Delhi Road.
The programme was attended by Chief Judicial Magistrate of Hooghly, Asimananda Mondal, while noted educationist, author, and Shiksha Ratna awardee Hasmat Ali graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Residents from various old-age homes across the district, along with several senior citizens, participated in the event.

The session focused on legal rights, dignified living, and mental well-being of senior citizens. Representing the Hooghly Chief Medical Officer of Health’s Mental Health Team, psychiatrist Dr. Debashis Das and psychologist Jhilam Banerjee spoke about maintaining mental health, overcoming loneliness, and adopting a positive outlook in later life.
Addressing the gathering, DLSA Secretary Manali Samanta highlighted the legal safeguards and support services available to senior citizens under the NALSA Jagriti Project. She remarked, “Age is just a number. Senior citizens are the custodians of our society’s wisdom and experience. Ensuring their physical and mental well-being is essential for building a healthy, compassionate, and progressive society.”
