Sanjay Khanna Appointed Chairman & Managing Director of BPCL

Kolkata, April 9, 2026: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a Fortune Global 500 and Maharatna public sector enterprise, has announced the appointment of Sanjay Khanna as its new Chairman & Managing Director (C&MD).

The appointment has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), following recommendations from the Search-cum-Selection Committee under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Khanna, who currently serves as Director (Refineries) at BPCL, will assume charge with immediate effect and will hold office until his superannuation on May 31, 2029, or until further orders.

A veteran of the energy sector, Khanna brings over three decades of experience in refinery operations, project execution, and technical services. A Chemical Engineering graduate from National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli and a postgraduate in Finance Management from University of Mumbai, he has been instrumental in strengthening BPCL’s refining and petrochemical capabilities.

Prior to his elevation, Khanna led key operations across BPCL’s Mumbai and Kochi refineries. As Executive Director of Kochi Refinery, he spearheaded the commissioning of the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project (PDPP), a flagship initiative that marked BPCL’s strategic entry into niche petrochemicals, successfully navigating operational challenges during the pandemic.

Throughout his career, Khanna has played a pivotal role in executing major projects involving new process units, contributing to enhanced operational efficiency, technological advancement, and improved value realization for the company.

In addition to his leadership role at BPCL, Khanna serves on the boards of Bharat Petro Resources Limited, Petronet LNG Limited, and Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited. He is also the Chairperson of the Technical Committee for Petroleum Refineries under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, contributing to policy formulation and technical advancements in India’s refining ecosystem.

With Khanna at the helm, BPCL is expected to accelerate its focus on value-added products, petrochemical integration, operational excellence, and long-term energy security. His leadership comes at a crucial time as the company navigates the global energy transition and strengthens its commitment to sustainable growth.
