Kolkata, 26 February 2026: In a landmark moment for the state’s healthcare sector, Charnock Hospital inaugurated Charnock Lohia Hospital, Bengal’s first private heritage super speciality hospital, in the heart of Central Kolkata. The 250-bed facility has been developed within a nearly 200-year-old Grade I heritage structure, formerly known as Lohia Matri Sewa Sadan, marking a rare confluence of architectural conservation and advanced medical infrastructure.

The hospital was inaugurated in the presence of several eminent dignitaries, including Firhad Hakim, Mayor of Kolkata; Shashi Panja, Hon’ble Minister-in-Charge, Industry, Commerce & Enterprise and Women & Child Development & Social Welfare; Chandrima Bhattacharya, Hon’ble Minister-in-Charge, Finance, Health & Family Welfare, Land & Land Reforms, Refugee & Rehabilitation; Sujit Bose, Minister of State for Fire; Dola Sen, Member of Parliament; along with MLAs, councillors and other distinguished guests.

Spread across nearly four bighas in Central Kolkata, the project represents an investment exceeding ₹250 crore. The restoration preserves the building’s neoclassical façade—reflecting Greek and Roman architectural influences—while equipping it with state-of-the-art tertiary and critical care facilities. The initiative is also expected to generate employment for nearly 1,000 people, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

Strategically located within 500 metres of Girish Park Metro Station, the hospital offers seamless connectivity to key commercial and residential hubs including Burrabazar, Jorasanko, Nimtala Ghat Street and Vivekananda Road. Multiple access points and ample parking facilities have been incorporated to ensure smooth patient movement in one of the city’s most densely populated zones.

The 250-bed super speciality facility includes over 90 ward beds and 20 private cabins, supported by 70+ ICU beds across multiple critical care disciplines. The hospital houses 4–6 advanced modular operation theatres, dedicated Cath Lab, CTVS and Neuro OTs, a 10-bed emergency department and a 10-bed dialysis unit. Comprehensive diagnostic and imaging services further enable integrated, technology-driven care under one roof.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mr. Prashant Sharma, Managing Director of Charnock Hospital, said the project demonstrates how heritage conservation and modern healthcare delivery can coexist seamlessly. He highlighted that Central Kolkata, particularly the Burrabazar belt, has long lacked access to a private super speciality hospital within a five-kilometre radius. “Timely access to advanced medical care can be life-saving. With Charnock Lohia Hospital, we are bringing world-class tertiary healthcare closer to where people live and work, staying true to our philosophy of ‘Patient First’,” he stated.

Originally serving as palace residences of prominent Bengali families during the colonial era, the heritage structure later functioned as the charitable Lohia Matri Sewa Sadan, a mother and child hospital. Now transformed into a NABH-compliant, state-of-the-art super speciality institution, Charnock Lohia Hospital stands as a pioneering example of adaptive reuse—preserving history while redefining healthcare delivery in North Kolkata and adjoining areas.
