Early Cancer Detection Strongly Linked to Higher Survival Rates: Experts Highlight at Suraksha Diagnostic Session

With India expected to record over 1.5 million new cancer cases by 2025 and incidence projected to rise by nearly 27.7% from 2015 to 2025, healthcare specialists are stressing the urgent need for early cancer screening. A recent expert session by Suraksha Clinic and Diagnostics, one of Eastern India’s leading diagnostics centres, highlighted that early-stage cancer detection significantly improves survival outcomes.

The session, held at Suraksha’s Serampore centre, featured senior medical specialists including Dr. Diptangshu Das, MS (Gold Medalist), FMAS, FIAGES, FGIIE, Consultant Surgical Oncology; and Dr. Barun Kumar Pal, MS (General Surgery), MCH (Neuro Surgery), Consultant Neuro & Spinal Surgery, RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.

Experts emphasised that early detection and regular cancer screening play a crucial role in reducing cancer mortality. When cancer is detected before it grows or spreads, treatment is more effective, less costly and less invasive. Early-stage tumours are typically smaller and localised, allowing for timely intervention before metastasis.According to healthcare studies, the cure rate of cancers detected at Stage 1 is nearly 85%, whereas the survival rate drops to below 30% when detected at Stage 3. In lung cancer, the survival rate across stages I to IV stands at approximately 65%, 40%, 15% and 5% respectively. For breast cancer patients, the survival rate is around 99% when detected early, falling to 33% in late-stage cases.

Lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women remain the most common cancer types in India. Doctors highlighted the need for greater awareness of the risk factors, symptoms, and warning signs to ensure timely diagnosis and improved patient outcomes.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Diptangshu Das noted:

“Knowledge is power. Cancer screening empowers the best survival outcomes. Don’t wait for symptoms—talk to your doctor and encourage loved ones to do the same. The best time to act is now.”

Sharing his perspective, Dr. Barun Kumar Pal added:

“The main goal of cancer screening is to cure cancer by detecting malignancy or precursor lesions at a stage when treatment is most effective. Screening has significantly reduced overall cancer mortality, particularly in breast and colorectal cancer.”
