Kolkata, 18th September 2025:
Desun Hospital has successfully conducted a Mitral Valve Replacement (MVR) surgery on a 46-year-old male patient from Jharkhand suffering from dextrocardia — a rare congenital condition in which the heart is positioned on the right side of the chest instead of the left.
While mitral valve replacement surgeries are regularly performed across India, with some hospitals recording over 1,000 procedures annually, cases involving dextrocardia remain extremely rare and clinically challenging.
The complex surgery was led by Dr. Soumyajit Ghosh, Senior Consultant CTVS Surgeon, along with a skilled team of cardiac surgeons and anaesthetists. Dr. Ghosh said, “We are committed to delivering advanced and compassionate care to every patient. Performing such a surgery on a patient with dextrocardia is particularly challenging, as it goes against our usual clinical instincts. Since we rarely encounter such cases, this has been a unique and rewarding experience.”
Supporting the surgical team, Dr. Subhendu Sarkar, Senior Cardiac Anaesthetist, highlighted the importance of anaesthesia management in such cases. “The role of proper anaesthesia is crucial in every cardiac surgery. However, in patients with dextrocardia, it becomes even more critical to ensure a safe and successful outcome,” he said.
Commenting on the achievement, Mr. Sajal Dutta, Chairman & MD, Desun Hospital, said, “Our focus remains on innovation and excellence to serve the community better. This surgery and its successful outcome stand as a testimony to our commitment to providing world-class treatment here in Kolkata.”
The patient, Mr. Vikash Paswan, had been suffering from severe shortness of breath due to advanced mitral valve disease. He was admitted to Desun Hospital on 9th September and, following a smooth post-surgical recovery, was discharged on 18th September.
Mitral Valve Replacement at Desun Hospital is performed by a highly experienced team of cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons and anaesthetists, supported by a specialised cardiac surgery unit, state-of-the-art steel modular operation theatres, and advanced post-operative care facilities. This successful case further reinforces Desun Hospital’s dedication to advancing care for rare and complex cardiac conditions.
