Kolkata, 03 June, 2025 – Environmental platform Sabuj Mancha has called for urgent and united action to tackle plastic pollution as the world prepares to observe World Environment Day on June 5.
Highlighting this year’s theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution”, the group stressed that symbolic gestures like tree planting or rallies are not enough. They urged citizens, institutions, and authorities to take concrete steps to address the growing environmental threat.
Plastics: A Growing Crisis
Sabuj Mancha pointed out that single-use plastic continues to pollute rivers, seas, and forests, even entering the food chain. Despite government bans in 2016 and 2022, enforcement remains weak. The group noted that plastic waste and harmful burning practices are still common in and around Kolkata.
Government and Corporate Responsibility
The organization blamed both government inaction and corporate irresponsibility for the ongoing plastic crisis. They demanded stricter implementation of plastic bans and stronger accountability under Extended Producer
Responsibility (EPR) norms.
Public Awareness Needed
Sabuj Mancha urged people to stop using plastic bags and shift to eco-friendly alternatives. They emphasized the need for continuous public awareness and active citizen participation.
Secretary Nab Dutta stated, “Environmental protection must go beyond one day—it needs commitment from everyone, every day.”
The group also raised concerns about illegal dumping, wetland destruction, and deforestation, calling for broader environmental reforms.
