The M.P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research has announced that Prof. Yashwant Gupta, Distinguished Professor and Centre Director at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Pune, has been selected for the highly esteemed M.P. Birla Memorial Award 2025.
The biennial honor recognizes Prof. Gupta’s remarkable contributions to Astronomy and Astrophysics, particularly his pioneering work in Radio Astronomy that has significantly advanced humanity’s understanding of the Universe.
Instituted in 1993 in memory of the late Shri M.P. Birla — founder of the M.P. Birla Planetarium — the award is one of the most respected accolades in the scientific community within Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Sciences and related disciplines.
The award selection committee praised Prof. Gupta for his innovative research, global impact on radio astronomical techniques, and his exemplary leadership in institution-building within the scientific ecosystem.
“Prof. Gupta’s dedication to expanding our knowledge of the cosmos truly embodies the spirit of the M.P. Birla Memorial Award,” said Mr. S.K. Daga, Honorary Secretary of the M.P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research, under whose aegis the M.P. Birla Planetarium operates.
“His pioneering research continues to open new avenues for scientific exploration and will inspire the next generation of astronomers,” added Mr. S. Datta, Curator, M.P. Birla Planetarium.
Expressing his gratitude upon being informed, Prof. Gupta conveyed that he was deeply honored by the recognition.
The award will be formally presented to Prof. Gupta at a special ceremony scheduled on December 5, 2025, at the M.P. Birla Planetarium, Kolkata.
