Kolkata, 04, June, 2025 :
Global scientific minds came together at the JIS Institute of Advanced Studies and Research (JISIASR) for the International Symposium on Genetic Diversity and Disease Biology (GDDB 2025), held at the JIS School of Medical Science and Research, Santragachi. The day-long event spotlighted cutting-edge advances in human and microbial genomics, with implications for tackling complex diseases and shaping the future of precision medicine.
The symposium kicked off with an inaugural ceremony attended by prominent dignitaries from the JIS Group and leading national and international researchers. The gathering served as a vital platform for knowledge-sharing across two dynamic technical sessions, complemented by a poster presentation competition that drew participation from PhD scholars across Kolkata’s premier research institutions.
In the first technical session—chaired by Padma Shri Prof. Ajoy Kumar Ray, Director of JISIASR—attention centered on non-communicable disease genomics. Genomics expert Prof. Partha Pratim Majumder presented landmark research on oral cancer, revealing key genomic drivers and transcriptomic shifts in precancerous lesions. Meanwhile, Prof. Ananyo Choudhury addressed the evolving frontier of precision medicine, stressing the significance of population-specific genetic variants in disease risk prediction and the personalization of drug therapies.
The spotlight then turned to infectious diseases in the second session, chaired by noted microbiologist Prof. Rukhsana Chowdhury. Prof. Steffen Backert shared groundbreaking insights into the role of Helicobacter pylori in gastric cancer, particularly through bacterial SNPs and secretion systems. Prof. Santasabuj Das wrapped up the session by highlighting how genetic diversity shapes pathogen virulence, showcasing the power of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and artificial intelligence in tracking infectious disease mechanisms.
Commenting on the symposium’s impact, Sardar Simarpreet Singh, Director of JIS Group, remarked, “At JIS Group, we believe the future of healthcare lies in decoding the language of our genes. GDDB 2025 wasn’t just a symposium—it was a confluence of minds determined to rewrite the way we understand, prevent, and treat disease through cutting-edge genomic science.”
As the curtains closed on GDDB 2025, the symposium reinforced Kolkata’s growing role in global biomedical research and underlined the transformative potential of genomics in reshaping the future of healthcare.
