Senior cancer specialists from Fortis Hospital, Anandapur underscored the life-saving importance of early screening and timely diagnosis during a Cancer Awareness Health Talk organised in collaboration with the Press Club, Kolkata on Tuesday.
The awareness session, held to mark World Cancer Awareness initiatives, brought together more than 50 media professionals and focused on educating the public about prevention, early warning signs, screening protocols, and the latest advancements in cancer treatment. The interactive format of the programme encouraged active dialogue, highlighting the growing need for informed and proactive cancer care across the city.
Experts noted a rising incidence of multiple cancers in Kolkata, particularly head & neck, breast, uterine, prostate, oral, and lung cancers. Doctors pointed out that tobacco consumption remains a major contributor to oral and lung cancers among men, while breast and cervical cancers continue to be leading health concerns for women—often exacerbated by late diagnosis, lack of awareness, and limited screening access, especially in rural pockets.
The session featured a distinguished panel of oncologists and specialists including:
- Dr Debapriya Mondal, Consultant – Medical Oncology
- Dr Sujata Datta, Senior Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- Dr Shrinivas Narayan, Director – Onco-Urology
Addressing the gathering, Ms Richa S Debgupta, Executive Vice President, Chief of Strategy, Group Head – ESG, Business Head Jaipur & Kolkata, Fortis Healthcare, emphasised the role of awareness in public health.
“At Fortis, we strongly believe that informed communities lead to healthier outcomes. By engaging directly with the media, we aim to bridge the gap between medical expertise and public understanding, ensuring that accurate and responsible health information reaches every household,” she said.
Echoing similar sentiments, Mr Ashish Mukherjee, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, highlighted the urgency of early action.
“Cancer awareness is not just about sharing information—it is about empowering people to act early. In a city like Kolkata, where head & neck, breast and cervical cancers remain highly prevalent, timely screening, lifestyle changes, and early medical intervention can save countless lives. Collaborations like this help dispel myths and strengthen community awareness,” he stated.
The initiative forms part of Fortis Healthcare’s broader outreach to promote preventive healthcare, encourage routine screenings, and improve early detection rates—critical factors that significantly enhance survival outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients.
