Diksha Manjari’s ‘Shyama’ Mesmerizes Pronam’s Senior Citizens at Rabindra Sadan

The evocative beauty of Rabindranath Tagore’s dance drama Shyama captivated hearts at Rabindra Sadan on Saturday, as over 100 senior citizens from the Pronam initiative witnessed a stunning performance by Diksha Manjari and Dakshinayan (UK).

Directed by Odissi maestro Dona Ganguly, with choreography by Raghu Nath Das and music by Dr. Ananda Gupta, the production dazzled with its expressive storytelling and refined classical technique.

Organized by Pronam a joint venture of Kolkata Police and The Bengal the event highlighted the initiative’s ongoing efforts to bring joy and cultural enrichment to the city’s elderly. Joint Convener Esha Dutta noted, “Diksha Manjari’s Shyama was a true gift to our members. As Pronam nears its 16th anniversary, we continue to celebrate life and community with our elders.”

A disciple of the legendary Kelucharan Mahapatra, Dona Ganguly’s journey began at the age of three under Amla Shankar, later training under Gurus like Giridhari Nayak. Her institution Diksha Manjari, inaugurated by Lata Mangeshkar, has become a beacon for classical dance in Kolkata.

Pronam, launched in 2009, now serves over 20,000 senior citizens through cultural events, health services, legal aid, and a strong suppor network reaffirming its commitment to dignity and well-being in later life.
