Kolkata, March 19: In a major breakthrough for hearing healthcare, CK Birla Hospitals – CMRI has become the first hospital in Eastern India to successfully perform cochlear implant surgery using the Nucleus Nexa System, the world’s first smart cochlear implant.
The surgery was carried out on an adult patient by leading ENT specialist Dr N V K Mohan, Senior Otologist and Cochlear Implant Surgeon at the hospital.
A New Era in Hearing Restoration
Cochlear implants have long provided hope to patients with severe hearing loss. However, the Nucleus Nexa System introduces a revolutionary upgrade to conventional technology.
The device features an internal memory system that securely stores personalized hearing settings, ensuring uninterrupted functionality even if the external processor malfunctions. It also includes daily self-diagnostic capabilities, alerting patients and families to any issues in real time.
Additionally, the implant intelligently adapts to surrounding sound environments, optimizing power consumption and ensuring longer battery life. Its most advanced feature is the ability to receive firmware updates, allowing patients to benefit from future technological advancements without undergoing additional surgeries.
Doctor’s Perspective
Speaking on the achievement, Dr. Mohan stated,
“This technology fundamentally changes patient care. It ensures reliability, reduces anxiety for families, and allows continuous technological upgrades without further surgical intervention.”
Rising Burden of Hearing Loss
Hearing impairment remains one of India’s most widespread health challenges. Studies indicate prevalence rates ranging from 6% to 26.9%, with disabling hearing loss affecting up to 18.3% of individuals.

The elderly population is particularly vulnerable, with nearly half of those above 60 years experiencing significant hearing issues. Limited access to advanced medical care in rural Eastern India has historically compounded the problem.
Strengthening Advanced Care in the East
Established in 1969, CK Birla Hospitals – CMRI is a NABH-accredited, 440-bed multi-specialty hospital known for pioneering advanced treatments.
Its ENT department, comprising specialists such as Dr Chirajit Dutta, Dr Arjun Dasgupta, Dr Anupama Satpathy, and Dr Prasit Biswas, continues to bring cutting-edge solutions to patients across the region.
The hospital is also the only corporate facility equipped with SmartNav technology, ensuring precise and safe placement of implants.
A Landmark Achievement
This milestone reinforces Kolkata’s position as a growing hub for advanced medical innovation. With the introduction of the Nucleus Nexa System, patients in Eastern India now have access to next-generation hearing solutions closer to home.
