Aashayein 2026 Announced: 800 Specially-Abled Children to Take the Field in Kolkata

Kolkata, January 27:
Kolkata is set to host a powerful celebration of ability, confidence and inclusion as 800 specially-abled children from across the city participate in the 12th edition of Aashayein – Roshni Umeedon Ki on February 1 at Gitanjali Stadium. The inclusive sporting event was formally announced on Tuesday by the Lions Club of Calcutta (District 322B1) during a media interaction in the city.

Recognised as one of the Lions Club of Calcutta’s most impactful social initiatives, Aashayein has grown into the city’s flagship inclusive sports carnival for children with special needs. The 2026 edition is being organised in association with Round Table India – Calcutta Midtown Round Table 113 and Ladies Circle India – Calcutta Midtown Ladies Circle 132, and will run from 9 am to 4 pm, featuring a full day of sporting competitions and engagement activities.

The announcement event was attended by CA Pawan Kumar Patodia, Vice President, Special Olympics Bharat and President, SO Bharat West Bengal; Lion Vivek Adukiya of Adukiya Industries; Tr. Harsh Karnani, Chairman, Calcutta Midtown Round Table 113; and Cr. Rashmi Bajaj, Chairperson, Calcutta Midtown Ladies Circle 132. The dignitaries emphasised the importance of collaboration in building inclusive platforms and reiterated their commitment to creating equal opportunities for children with special needs.

This year, Aashayein 2026 will witness participation from 38 special institutions across Kolkata, making it one of the largest inclusive sporting initiatives in the region. Modelled on a Paralympics-style sports meet, the event aims to provide a competitive yet nurturing environment where children can display their abilities, determination and sporting spirit.

Addressing the gathering, Lion Gopal Krishna Agarwal, President, Lions Club of Calcutta, said, “Aashayein embodies the true spirit of Lionism — service rooted in compassion and dignity. Every child who participates is already a winner. The real achievement lies not in medals alone, but in building confidence, joy and a sense of belonging.”

The sporting programme will include track and field events such as 50-metre and 100-metre flat races, SBT ball throw and shot put, conducted under the supervision of 40 trained officials from the Sodepur Referee Association (SRA) to ensure fairness and participant safety.

Beyond athletics, the event will offer a vibrant carnival experience with a dedicated fun zone. All participants will receive meals, event T-shirts, jackets and caps, along with gift hampers containing school supplies and refreshments.

Reaffirming its inclusive philosophy, the organisers stated that Aashayein celebrates ability over limitation, promising a day where success is measured not just by medals, but by smiles, confidence and courage.
