New Delhi, June 2, 2026: In a landmark move towards sustainable packaging, Mother Dairy has unveiled India’s first naturally degradable milk pouch, setting a new benchmark for environmental responsibility in the dairy sector.
The innovative packaging, which will be introduced through Mother Dairy’s popular Cow Milk variant in Delhi-NCR from June 5, 2026 (World Environment Day), is designed to transform into bioavailable wax when exposed to soil. This wax is then naturally broken down by soil microbes into natural elements, significantly reducing long-term plastic pollution.
Announcing the initiative, Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Mother Dairy, described the launch as a major milestone for India’s dairy industry. He highlighted that the pouch is engineered to degrade in soil within a few years rather than centuries, while ensuring that consumers will not face any increase in milk prices.
Mother Dairy emphasized that the new packaging requires no change in consumer behavior. The pouch can be stored, handled, and disposed of just like existing milk packets, with no impact on the milk’s quality, taste, freshness, or shelf life.
Speaking about the breakthrough, Jayatheertha Chary, Managing Director of Mother Dairy, revealed that the innovation is the result of more than four years of dedicated research and development. While the pouches remain recyclable, their ability to naturally degrade into harmless elements provides an additional solution to the growing challenge of plastic waste in the environment.
Alongside the sustainability initiative, Mother Dairy is also rolling out a refreshed packaging design for its milk portfolio. The new design introduces the brand’s “Note of Care” identity, inspired by its iconic logo and reflecting the warmth and affection associated with Mother Dairy’s promise of “Maa Jaisi Care.”
With this pioneering launch, Mother Dairy has once again demonstrated its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and environmental stewardship, reinforcing its position as a leader in India’s dairy industry.
