Eden Gardens, widely known as the “Home of Indian Cricket,” is set for a massive infrastructure overhaul as global architecture firm Populous unveiled its ambitious redevelopment vision for the iconic stadium.
The proposed modernization project aims to transform the legendary venue into a world-class multi-purpose sports and entertainment hub while preserving its historic legacy. Once completed, the stadium’s seating capacity will increase dramatically from 68,000 to nearly 85,000 spectators, making it one of the largest cricket stadiums in the world.
The redevelopment plan focuses heavily on fan experience, safety, premium hospitality, and year-round commercial usability. The upgraded venue will feature more than 41,000 square feet of hospitality space along with 44,000 square feet dedicated to non-match day activities. Corporate hospitality seating is expected to rise by 30 percent, opening new avenues for large-scale sporting and entertainment events.
A major attraction of the redesign will be the introduction of a spectacular Sky Deck and Sky Lounge, offering panoramic views of Kolkata’s skyline and the stadium atmosphere. Dedicated IPL fan zones, luxurious corporate boxes, modern lounges, and an exclusive Members’ Club are also part of the blueprint aimed at redefining the spectator experience.
Despite the modernization push, the heritage value of the stadium remains central to the project. Built in 1864, Eden Gardens holds a special place in cricket history, and the redevelopment will include a museum, hall of fame, and interactive digital engagement zones to celebrate its rich legacy.
Speaking on the project, Siddharth Soni, Principal Architect at Populous, said the redevelopment would transform Eden Gardens into a true 21st-century sporting venue with safety, sustainability, and fan engagement at its core.
Former Indian captain and Cricket Association of Bengal President Sourav Ganguly described the project as emotional and historic, saying the vision is to make Eden Gardens one of the finest cricket venues globally in terms of quality, comfort, and overall experience.
Pranav Kashyap, Associate Principal at Populous, highlighted the challenges of redeveloping a dense heritage-rich urban site but stated that the project would create unmatched experiences for players, fans, and commercial stakeholders alike.
The redevelopment also reflects growing international collaboration in infrastructure innovation, supported by Trade and Investment Queensland, which has played a key role in strengthening partnerships between Australia and India.
Known globally for designing landmark sporting venues such as Narendra Modi Stadium, Lord’s Cricket Ground, and Melbourne Cricket Ground, Populous now brings its international expertise to reshape one of cricket’s most iconic stadiums for the future.
