Kolkata: In a major leap towards inclusive and community-driven healthcare, Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute has launched Eastern India’s first-ever Mobile Vision Van outreach camp, a pioneering initiative designed to deliver advanced eye-care services directly to underserved and remote populations.
The landmark initiative was formally inaugurated by Atin Ghosh, Hon’ble Deputy Mayor of Kolkata, alongside senior health officials and representatives from Cognizant, marking a powerful collaboration between healthcare, governance, and corporate social responsibility.
The launch ceremony witnessed the presence of senior leadership from Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute and Cognizant, reflecting a shared commitment to addressing preventable blindness through innovation and outreach.
Bringing Advanced Eye Care to the Doorstep
Aligned with the Institute’s long-standing Sight4All mission, the Mobile Vision Van programme aims to bridge critical gaps in eye-care accessibility by offering free, on-the-spot vision screening, advanced diagnostics, and eye-health awareness to economically and geographically challenged communities.
Supported by the Cognizant Foundation and implemented by Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute, the outreach initiative commenced operations from Urban Primary Health Centres under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and is now expanding across Primary Health Centres in the Basirhat Health District.
Specially trained medical teams are travelling from village to village, ensuring that quality tertiary eye-care services reach communities that have traditionally remained beyond the reach of advanced diagnostics.
Technology-Driven, Patient-Centric Care
The Mobile Vision Van is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, including a Retinal Imaging Machine, Non-Contact Tonometer, and Digital Auto-Refractometer, enabling early detection of Diabetic Retinopathy, glaucoma, and retina-related disorders through quick, painless, and accurate evaluations.

Speaking at the launch, the Director of Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute emphasised that taking advanced diagnostics to community doorsteps is key to tackling preventable blindness at its root and ensuring equitable access to eye care, regardless of location or financial constraints.
Echoing this sentiment, the Hon’ble Deputy Mayor highlighted the initiative as a benchmark in community healthcare, demonstrating how technology, partnerships, and compassion can converge to create meaningful and lasting impact for vulnerable populations.
Advancing the Vision of Sight4All
With strong community participation and an enthusiastic response from beneficiaries, Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute continues to reinforce its commitment to accessible, affordable, and community-centric eye-care services, steadily advancing the vision of Sight4All across Eastern India.
