Purvodaya Literary Festival – Second Edition Opens with Cultural Grandeur and Intellectual Spirit

Kolkata, 24 November 2025: The Institute of Social and Cultural Studies (ISCS), in collaboration with the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies (MAKAIAS), inaugurated the second edition of the Purvodaya Literary Festival on Monday at the Satyajit Ray Auditorium (ICCR). The opening ceremony set an exuberant and intellectually stimulating tone, drawing an impressive gathering of literary enthusiasts, scholars, performers, artists, students and culture lovers.

The inaugural session was graced by H.E. Dr. C. V. Ananda Bose, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal, as the Chief Guest, while Padma Shri awardee Shri Rajendra Singh, renowned environmentalist and widely known as the “Water Man of India,” joined as the Guest of Honour, adding an environmental dimension to the festival’s evolving cultural narrative.

In his keynote address, Governor Dr. Bose congratulated awardees Paramita Satpathy and Rajendra Singh, remarking that “true literary honours choose only a rare few.” He reflected on India’s deep literary environmental consciousness—from Valmiki’s poetic vision to Kalidasa’s evocative portrayal of nature—and spoke of how his own Himalayan experiences shaped his understanding of ecological sensitivity. Referencing Coleridge’s imagination, the philosophical depth of the Bhagavad Gita and his upcoming book Jungle in the Mind, he underscored the enduring role of literature in shaping society, inspiring inquiry and nurturing human values. He concluded with a call for cultural and social renewal.

A key highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Second Purvodaya Excellence Award to acclaimed writer Paramita Satpathy, recognising her remarkable contribution to contemporary Indian literature.

Designed as a celebration of the East’s cultural dynamism, this year’s festival features an expansive mix of ideas and artistic expression. The opening day drew enthusiasm through literary talks, panel discussions, recitations, quizzes, fashion showcases, art competitions and Nukkad Natak performances. Two special exhibitions attracted significant attention—Purvodaya Litpex: A Philatelic Exhibition on Literature, and The Indonesian Odyssey of Rabindranath Tagore, showcasing rare archival material and lesser-explored cultural linkages.

Also present at the ceremony was Shri Arindam Mukherjee, Director, ISCS, whose vision continues to steer the festival’s growth. Speaking on the opening day’s success, he said,
“Purvodaya Lit Fest celebrates the stories and ideas that define who we are as a society. This chapter once again reaffirmed the power of literature to connect communities, spark conversations, and encourage young minds to explore their creative and intellectual potential.”
