Geological Survey of India Joins Swachh Bharat Mission with Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 Initiatives

Kolkata, 15 September 2025 – The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has announced a series of nationwide cleanliness initiatives under the Government of India’s flagship Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2025 campaign, scheduled from 17 September to 2 October 2025. This year’s theme, “Swachhotsav – Clean and Green Festivities & Zero-Waste Community Celebrations”, focuses on sustainable practices, collective responsibility, and citizen participation.

As part of the campaign, GSI will act on five key pillars: transforming Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs), rejuvenating public spaces, safeguarding Safai Mitras, promoting eco-friendly festivities, and driving advocacy for Swachhata.

The campaign will be inaugurated on 17 September 2025 with a mass Swachhata Pledge across all GSI offices in India, alongside plantation drives under “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, disposal of scrap and e-waste, and the felicitation of sanitation workers for their invaluable contributions.

A core focus will be the transformation of 34 identified CTUs across the country, where GSI teams will collaborate with local authorities and communities to refurbish black spots and ensure sustainable upkeep. In addition, cleanliness drives will be undertaken in GSI offices, market areas, transport hubs, parks, and geo-heritage sites, with emphasis on public participation.

To safeguard sanitation workers, Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivirs will be organized, offering preventive health check-ups, PPE distribution, and access to social welfare schemes. In promoting Clean Green Festivities, GSI will encourage waste-free puja celebrations, Swachhata rangolis, waste-to-art projects, and systematic post-festival clean-ups.

The campaign will also include advocacy programmes such as rallies, human chains, youth competitions, and awareness drives to spread the message of cleanliness among communities and students.

On 25 September 2025, GSI will actively join the national movement “Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath”, mobilizing staff and citizens for a one-hour collective cleanliness drive at multiple locations. Special drives will also be conducted at prominent geo-heritage sites including Nomira Pillow Lava (Odisha), Barabar Caves (Bihar), Dinosaur Fossil Park (Gujarat), and Sendra Granite (Rajasthan).

The campaign will culminate on 2 October 2025, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, with a closing ceremony recognizing Safai Mitras and outstanding contributors to SHS 2025.

Through these efforts, GSI reaffirmed its commitment to the Swachh Bharat Mission, reinforcing cleanliness as a shared responsibility and an integral part of daily life.
